What Are Private Universities?
Private Universities are tertiary institutions that are funded and managed by the private sector, these schools are not owned by the state nor operated by any GOVT Parastatal.
We have three (3) levels of Governments in Nigeria (Federal, State and Local), and these universities fall under the coffers of none, and as such, both Federal and State Government do not have much influence or say about what may or may not happen in such schools.
So, the appointments of the VC and other internal school affairs is done strictly by the the Private Management (Owner).
There are at least two private Universities located in every state in Nigeria, currently there are One hundred and eleven (111) Private Universities in Nigeria, this number is more than the number of Federal and State Universities in Nigeria combined.
Now that you can differentiate between Federal, State and Private Universities, let me now show you NUC approved list of Private Universities in Nigeria.

Private University Admission Requirement
- Candidate must have a JAMB score of 120 and above
- You must have select them in JAMB (first or Second choice), these schools do not mind if you select them as first choice or not. If for any reason you did not first apply to them through JAMB , you can always apply for change of Institution and pick them as either first or second choice.
- Candidates must possess Ordinary Level with credit passes in at least 5 relevant subjects in not more than two sittings
Comparison Between Private, State And Federal Universities
1. Cost
Students pay much more in private universities than in Federal or State Universities, this is no shock because, these schools do not receive any form of financial support elsewhere and Staff of the school (Academic and Non Academic Staff) will be paid from the money generated by the school.
So, where a student in the University of Benin (UNIBEN) pays N45,000 per session (first and Second Semester) another student elsewhere studying in a Private University could be paying times ten (10) that amount.
2. Competitiveness
Private Universities are less competitive than Federal and state Universities in Nigeria, which is completely understandable, because of the high amount of tuition fee students are asked to pay.
For this reason, admission to Private schools is as easy as sitting for JAMB, provided you meet with the requirement highlighted earlier in this post (although some schools may twerk theirs a bit).
3. Courses Offered
Since Federal and State universities are funded by the government, they have the finances to sponsor a lot of courses, unlike Private Universities, and as such there may be a course you want to study but because the private University you applied to do not offer it, you may have to change it.
4. Ease Of Study
This is one area where Private Universities beats both Federal and State University hands down.
When studying in a private University there is no fear of Industrial Action (Strike), so you get to study a course for the expected period (4, 5 or 6 years).
With these few comparison, you should be able to make up your mind on the University you want to apply to.
