Both PharmD and B. Pharm are the certifying degree offered to graduands of Pharmacy.

While Pharm. D is a professional doctorate in pharmacy, the B. Pharm program is a Bachelor degree in pharmacy, in some countries the minimum degree to practice as a Pharmacist is with the Pharm. D.

In Nigeria currently, the minimum degree to practice as a Pharmacist is B Pharm, but as pharmacy as a practice evolves to be more clinically inclined the need to incorporate the Pharm. D Program has become sacrosanct.

Out of over 100 Universities in Nigeria, only about 23 schools offers Pharmacy and not more than 7 of these Universities offers PharmD Program making it very quite competitive to study in Nigeria…

PSN has predicted that as time goes on, the Pharm. D degree would be the minimum registration/licensing degree requirement of fresh graduates of School Pharmacy in Nigeria

    1. School of Pharmacy in any University in Nigeria is regulated by two bodies, NUC (National university commission) and PCN (Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria)

So you get some schools having partial accreditation (from either of those two bodies mentioned above instead of both).

Pls does that mean that UNIZIK is in the wait list of universities about to obtain accreditation for pharm.D?
    Ques 2:
Is pharmacology a specialty of pharmacy in universities most especially in Nigeria, like how medicine students specialize in their particular field of medical career?

    1. Answer to ques 1: YES

Answer to ques 2: Yes, after graduating from Pharmacy school, you can decide to specialize in any of the six departments in Pharmacy by coming back for your masters of which Pharmacology is part of.

  3. Pls is pharmaceutical technology different from pharmacy

I mean when a school offers pharmaceutical technology, does that mean pharmacy or a variant of pharmacy?

    1. Hey Johnny, Pharmaceutical technology is not pharmacy, some of the differences between these two are:

      1. Students who study pharmacy are called pharmacist, while students that study pharmaceutical technology will be addressed as pharmaceutical technologist or technicians.

      2. Pharmacy is offered in Universities while Pharmaceutical technology is offered in Polytechnics.

      3. Students who study pharmacy upon graduation are given license to practice as pharmacist.

There are others, but this is enough now, if you have further questions feel free to drop them🥂
