What Are State Universities?
State universities are tertiary institutions that are funded and managed by the State Government where the University is located at.
We have three (3) levels of Governments in Nigeria (Federal, State and Local), and this universities fall under the coffers of the State govt, and as such, the Federal govt do not have much influence or say about what may or may not happen in such schools.
So, the appointments of the VC and other internal school affairs is done strictly by the State Government and not Federal.
Each States owns at least one University, as against the forty nine (49) federal Universities we have, there are Fifty Seven (57) Universities in Nigeria that are State Owned and more are been added from time to time.

Comparison Between State And Federal Universities
1. Cost
With respect to Money, State Universities are more expensive to study in than Federal Universities, we have students in some state Universities paying over N200,000 as school fees alone, not adding Accommodation and feeding.
While Students in Federal Universities can be Paying as low as N50,000 for schools fees.
2. Competitiveness
Federal Universities are more competitive than state Universities, since most student apply for Federal Universities more, than they apply to state Universities.
For this reason, admission to federal schools is not for the faint hearted, you must make sure you do exceedingly well in your JAMB and Post UTME to be assured of admission.
3. Courses Offered
Since Federal Universities are funded by the Federal government, they have the finances to sponsor a lot of courses, but state Universities are funded by the State, and as such there are lots of courses you may want to study but won’t be offered in your desired state school of choice.
