I’m pretty sure you must have heard that “scoring 270 in JAMB means your name is automatically in your school of choice first batch to your desired course” well, just so you know, this is not true

We’ve seen students with JAMB score of over 300 yet was denied admission to the Course they applied for.

But the point am trying to make is that, there are other powers at playing with respect to admission other than your JAMB Score, In fact, your JAMB score is only as good as the school and course you applied for.

There are certain factors that must be considered concomitantly with your JAMB score before you can say ‘Oh! my JAMB score is high’ or ‘Oh! my JAMB score is low’ I will take my time to list these factors and explain them each in details…

These Factors Include but are not limited to…

  1. Nature Of Applied Course
  2. Competitiveness of your School of Choice
  3. General Performance of Student

1. Nature Of Applied Course

The course you applied for goes a long way in determining how high you should score in JAMB, Now, I guess we already know that some courses are more competitive than others (By competitive I mean more number of students apply to these courses when compared to others).

Here’s a case study?

Lets Say we have two Students, A and B, Student A applied to a course like Law and scored 250 in JAMB, while Student B applied for Botany and scored same 250

Between this two students (A and B) who do you think is more likely to be admitted?, It is obviously going to be Student B, but they both had same JAMB score right?, that is where the Study Course factor comes in.

Law is a very competitive course In Nigeria while Botany is not, So for student applying to courses that are competitive you have a lot of work to do, some of these courses that are competitive include but is not limited to…

  1. Medicine and surgery
  2. Law
  3. Pharmacy
  4. Communication arts/ Mass communication
  5. Dentistry / Dental Surgery
  6. Nursing
  7. Political Science
  8. Electrical/Electronic engineering
  9. Computer Science
  10. Biochemistry

If you applied to any of the course highlighted above, then you must aim at scoring above 270 in JAMB to be on a safer side… Now moving to the second factor we have ‘How competitive the school you applied to is’

2. Competitiveness of School of choice

For those who may not know, your JAMB score is also as good as the school you applied for.

Some schools are more competitive than others, Students who applied to Schools like ABU, UNIBEN, UI, UNILORIN, that are known to have a high number of JAMB applicants have a lot of work to do.

If you must apply to these schools then you must be willing to study diligently and excel…

The higher the admission capacity of a University, the more student they will be able to admit, this can also help increase the chance of student with low JAMB Score, but schools with high admission capacity won’t be of any good to student with low JAMB score.

Below is a list of some of these competitive Universities…

  1. University of Ilorin (UNILORIN
  2. Ahmadu Bello University (ABU)
  3. University of Benin (UNIBEN)
  4. University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)
  5. University of Lagos (UNILAG)
  6. Bayero University Kano (BUK)
  7. Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU)
  8. Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK)
  9. University of Ibadan (UI)
  10. University of Jos (UNIJOS)

The list of Universities above are the top 10 most applied for University in JAMB

3. General Performance of Student

The general performance of student in JAMB is a very very important factor in determining how good your JAMB score is, if the general performance of student is poor (lets say, most student had a score within the range of 180 -140) and you were fortunate enough to score above 270, you automatically become an hot cake student.

But if the General performance of student is very high, that is within the range of 260 – 300, then scoring 270 in JAMB for that year is not so much of a big deal, you get the picture am trying to paint now right?

So, the higher the success rate of student, the higher the JAMB and School departmental cut off mark, and vice versa.

JAMB Score To Gain Admission

High Jamb Score

Haven understood the various factors that affects admission, I have come up with a range of score guided by these factors that is suitable to gain admission to any school of your choice.

  1. JAMB score of 300+ is good enough to secure your admission to any course of your choice if you also perform very well in your Post UTME
  2. JAMB Score of 250 – 270 can give you a chance of studying a competitive course
  3. With a JAMB score of 200 – 250 you will have a chance for a moderately competitive course.

In Conclusion

JAMB score that can give you admission in 2024 without much fuse is 280, with this JAMB Score you should be good to go, mind you this must be backed with scoring well in Post UTME.

  1. Sir, do I have a brighter chance with a UTME score of 301 to study Medicine and Surgery in UI?
What are the possible subject combination o should be expecting for the postume aptitude test?
Can I have access to these past questions to aid my practice?

    • With a JAMB score of 301 you have a great chance of studying medicine and surgery in UI but only if you replicate the same excellence in the Post UTME.

Currently, we are working round the clock to provide different Post UTME past questions for the different schools.

As for UI Post UTME Subject combination, it is similar to what you did in JAMB

    • Unfortunately Favour, no Federal or State University currently accepts 178 Jamb score for admission…

A better alternative would be a good polytechnic or Private University.
