For those who may not be aware, out of 1.2million student that sat for JAMB, only about 30% of the student will be granted admission.

And about 70% of the total number of student that passed JAMB will be denied admission, not because they had a low JAMB score, but because JAMB is not the Only obstacle you need to overcome in order to gain admission in any School (University, Polytechnic or Colleges of Education) of your choice.

JAMB constitute 50% of admission criteria, which means, passing JAMB with a high score, lets say 270, only gives you a 50% chance of gaining admission.

The next big question that pops up from your mind is, what then makes up the remaining 50%??

Well, the answer is quite simple, the school you applied for decides how the other 50% will be summed up, this is mainly for check and balance purposes and also preventing the regulatory body (JAMB) from having Sole responsibility of  admitting student into higher institution.

Universities that don't write Post UTME

Different schools employ different method for their Post UTME, these methods include but not limited to…

  1. Test Screening
  2. Physical Screening
  3. Online Screening
  4. Oral Screening

I will take out time to explain each of the methods and their intricacies… Stay tuned!!!

1. Test Screening

This is the most popular and most employed way of sorting out student for admission, this method in reality is what is actually called POST UTME, just like JAMB, Universities employing this method of screening allows student to sit for another exam but this time the questions are prepared by the school.

This test could either be Paper Pen Test ( short for PPT, PPT is now outdate as most Universities and Polytechnics would rather settle with PPT) or Computer Based Test (Short for CBT), although most schools if not all conduct CBT Post UTM Exam not PPT, but no need to be scared, the setting is similar to JAMB.

Schools like, University of Benin (UNIBEN), Ahmadu Bellow University (ABU) and UNIZIK often use this method.

Before your Post UTME test screening, you will be given your Exam schedule, which will contain the Venue, date and Time for your exam just like JAMB Reprinting.

2. Physical Screening

In this method, only the presence of the student and their qualification certificate are required, this means, you will not be sitting for any exam unlike in ‘test screening’.

This method occurs in two phases, in the first phase, you will be asked to submit your documents (I will list these items shortly) online, before presenting them to the school physically, hence the name ‘Physical Screening’

Meeting with your Screening officer for your department, these documents will be validated together with your O’ level graded, so student with good O’ level (WAEC, NECO or NABTEB) grade will benefit much from this method.

Below are some of the documents you may be asked to submit…

  • Original JAMB Result
  • Your O’level Certificate or result print out with their respective Scratch card
  • Online Post UTME Registration Printout
  • Screening Schedule Printout
  • Birth Certificate
  • Local Government of Origin Certificate
  • JAMB Direct Entry registration slip for DE student
  • JAMB UTME registration slip for UTME student

Do well to keep these certificate very well after use, because you will be needing them for your clearance when eventually admitted.

3. Online Screening

This is another method used by Schools for screening her student.

Here, students will be asked to submit their credentials online without sitting for any exam, you can see this method as an incomplete physical screening exercise, where the only difference is that student will not come in physical contact with their Screening officer for validation.

Here, your O’level result has to be very good also. The credentials you would be asked to submit is similar to those listed in the Physical screening method.

4. Oral Screening

Oral Examination Test of Student

This is not common, but it is still in use particularly for Direct entry Student. This screening is like an interview, where you will be asked questions orally and you are expected to respond.

Schools employ any of these method for their post UTME screening, Irrespective of the method used by your school choice, try to stay focused and determined, these are the only things that will get you through this phase.
